What is Botox?
Botox is one of the most popular medical aesthetic treatments in the world today, with millions of men and women opting for it, for a variety of reasons. When administered by a trained and certified physician, Botox is a safe and effective way to smooth skin by effectively relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles.
Botox is now being offered at Perfect You by Dr. Bob Flood, a medical doctor of over 20 years, who is fully certified in Botox clinical treatments. All injections are performed by Dr. Flood, in Perfect You’s licensed, fully private, and newly constructed medical aesthetic lounge. Botox is popular for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases. The injections are sometime used to treat other medical conditions, too, such as cervical dystonia, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, lazy eye and chronic migraines. Please inquire with Dr. Flood about these other conditions, and he can help you ascertain whether this is the best treatment for any given condition, or whether other treatment options may prove to be a better option.
Botox: Frequently Asked Questions
How do appointments work for 30 minute consultations?
All appointments are free to book, and offered on a free consultation basis. Dr. Flood is there to help you assess whether Botox is the right procedure for you. If you mutually decide that it’s a procedure which is suitable for you, both medically and aesthetically, then the half hour consultation period offers enough time for the initial treatment.
How does the procedure work?
Botox is injected with a very small gauge needle, in the areas where it will help the appropriate muscles relax. The number of injections you need will vary, depending on a variety of factors, including the size of the area being treated. Anywhere from about 2 to 20 injections are used in a session. This only takes a few minutes, as amounts being injected are miniscule. Patients compare the sensation to being much more similar to acupuncture than to a typical injection. The effects usually take a few days to become noticeable. The effect may last up to three months or longer.
Is it painful?
No, Botox injections are generally not considered painful. Patients will describe the sensation as mild discomfort.
Does Botox work on deep forehead wrinkles, or do you have to catch them early for it to make a big difference?
All forms of Botox injections approved by Health Canada for forehead wrinkle reduction are intended for people younger than 65. The medication may not be as effective as it is for younger individuals. Generally, people older than 65 will combine Botox with fillers, in order to achieve the same results as Botox alone on a younger individual.
Is long-term use safe? What happens if I have the injections regularly for a few years, but then quit? Will my forehead look worse than if I had never gotten Botox? What safety concerns should I have?
Botox has been shown to be safe for short and long-term use. Wrinkle treatment data for Botox goes back about 15 years. Botox for wrinkles uses a much smaller dose than patients receive for other conditions, such as muscle spasticity. Significant safety concerns have not been identified in people who receive larger doses of Botox for those other problems ─ further supporting the safety of these treatments.
The concern that Botox will cause you to look worse over time, is a myth. You can stop using it at any time without your skin looking worse than it did before you started Botox. Botox does not have any addictive qualities, so there are no withdrawal symptoms or other adverse affects from long term use. The most important factor to the safety of Botox is to insure that a certified Medical Doctor both prescribes the treatment, and performs the procedures. At Perfect You, we do not allow anyone, other than a Medical Doctor prescribe and perform procedures on patients. We believe that safety concerns are minimized when having your procedures performed by a licensed physician who is certified in Botox application.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a neuromodulator that blocks certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause muscles to contract. This temporarily relaxes the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles, including forehead furrows. But, it is important to recognize that the results will be more effective in a younger population. For older adults to achieve the same results as younger patients, Botox should be used in combination with facial fillers injected into the skin to soften wrinkles.
How much does Botox cost?
Perfect You charges $9.87 (CAD) per unit. A typical sessions will include between 20 and 75 units.
Do you have a certified Medical Doctor (MD) performing the procedures, or on staff?
All of the injections and consultations are performed by physician, Dr. Bob Flood. The Botox we use is provided directly by Allergan. Containers are stored in a temperature controlled and monitored refrigeration system.
